The Ronald McDonald House of Ann Arbor provides a "home away from
home" for families of children who are receiving treatment at area
hospitals.
We offer a variety of service opportunities for groups interested in volunteering
at the House. Church groups, university students, high schools, office
staffs and other organizations have done group service for the House.
We request limiting your group size to six people at a time to maintain
the restful atmosphere at the House.
Some suggested group service opportunities include:
Cooking a meal for our residents by planning a menu, shopping for the
food items, preparing and serving the meal at the House, and then cleaning
our kitchen. Please plan to cook for 35-40 people.
Bake cookies (or other baked goods) in our kitchen or your own.
(To learn more about how your group can make a meal or bake goodies for
Ronald McDonald House families, read our suggestions.)
Coordinate a donation drive for the House by distributing copies of our
"Wish List", collecting donated items and bringing them to the
House. We are especially interested in donation drives for linens, cleaning
supplies and paper
products paper towels, toilet paper and tissues.
If you're interested in volunteering, please call one of our House managers
at 734-994-4442.
What's
cookin' at the Ronald McDonald House? (click here for information sheet)
Preparing meals and baked goods for the families staying at Ronald McDonald House
is much appreciated. Your efforts help take the burden off of many
families that do not have the time or energy to do so themselves.
Groups preparing meals can expect to cook for 35-40 people. While
they may not all sit down to eat when the meal has been prepared, many
will enjoy the leftovers that are placed in the community refrigerator.
What can groups expect when they come to the House
to prepare a meal?
Groups need to bring the food items their recipes require.
Groups should check in at the office to:
- meet the staff person on
duty
- give your group's name and
other information to the staff person
- ask the office volunteer
for parking permits if you parked your car(s) in the House's parking
lot
- request a short tour and
orientation to the House
- leave coats, purses, etc.
in the office area
Groups can then cook their
meal or prepare their baked goods. Staff members and office volunteers
can help with questions regarding kitchen procedures, etc. Cupboards are
labeled so you can more easily find necessary kitchen items. Let the office
volunteer know when your meal or baked goods are ready and he or she will
page the families.
The meal can then be served, with any leftovers placed in plastic storage containers.
Label with contents and date and store in the community refrigerator. Items that do not
require refrigeration can be covered with plastic wrap and left on the kitchen islands.
All kitchen counters should be cleaned, and all dirty pots and pans, kitchen
utensils and dishes placed in the dishwasher. The kitchen floor should
also be swept. Cleaning supplies are located in the storeroom adjacent
to the dining room.
